Radon is an odorless and tasteless gas that results from the breakdown of uranium in the soil. Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer. Iowa has one of the highest average rates of radon in the United States. Radon is measured in picocuries per liter, or pCi/L. The EPA has set a threshold of 4 pCi/L. They recommend action to reduce the radon levels of the home if the radon level is 4 pCi/L or higher. The most common way to achieve this is through a radon mitigation system. Mescher Home Inspections is state certified and equipped to perform radon testing using a continuous radon monitor. The radon monitor must sit in the home and conduct its measurements for 48 hours. We will then collect the monitor and report the findings to you via email. If you choose to test for radon, please order your radon test when scheduling your home inspection. This will enable us to set the radon monitor before the home inspection and provide results to you on the day of your inspection.
